The Alaska Board of Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics regulates the practice of orthotics, prosthetics and pedorthics in the State of Alaska. The practice of orthotics, prosthetics and pedorthics includes the fitting of artificial limbs, braces, appliances or other devices for the rehabilitation of impaired or disabled persons.
As a result of federal legislation passed by Congress in 1973, all states are required to have a state board to regulate the practice of orthotic and prosthetic medicine (except for Hawaii). The Alaska Board was created by the Alaska Legislature on April 28th 1979.
The Board is comprised of seven members appointed by the Governor with Senate confirmation for staggered terms not to exceed six years in length. Members must be residents of Alaska who are knowledgeable in orthotic/prosthetic medicine and who have been engaged in such practice as a full-time occupation for at least five years prior to appointment.
