Oregon is one of the few states that allow individuals with a high school diploma to become certified as a nursing assistant. However, before they can begin this career path, they must complete a state-approved training program that includes both classroom and hands-on instruction. This course covers the basic skills necessary for this position, including how to take vital signs and administer medications. It also teaches students about infection control procedures and how to perform simple medical tasks such as dressing wounds or administering eye drops.

The Oregon Nursing Assistant Certification Exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions that must be completed within one hour. The exam costs $50 and is administered by Pearson VUE, who also offers testing locations throughout the state. To pass the exam, students must score at least 75% on each section of the test (i.e., 25 out of 30 questions) or have no more than three incorrect answers out of 50 total questions. Students who fail this exam may retake it once per day at no additional cost; however, they must pay $50 every time they wish to take it again after their initial attempt has been unsuccessful.
