The South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation administers the South Dakota Certified Social Worker (CSW) examination. The CSW certification program is a voluntary process that requires individuals to meet minimum education, training and experience requirements; pass an examination; and adhere to an ethics code.

An applicant for certification as a CSW must:

Hold a master's degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education accredited school or university (or equivalent).

Have at least three years of full time paid employment in the field of social work after completing the educational requirements for the master's degree.

Pass an examination administered by the department.

Once certified, a licensed CSW must renew their license every two years by earning continuing education units (CEUs). Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn.
