The material covered in this course will help students better understand how their own personal genetic information could impact their risk for certain diseases or conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 1 (type I), color blindness and more. Students will also learn about the value that genetics play in reducing the incidence of certain birth defects before birth through prenatal diagnosis and screening tests such as maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) or Triple Screen with integrated first trimester screen (FIRST).
