[South Dakota Lawyer Learning Course] The South Dakota Lawyer Learning Course is a mandatory program for all new attorneys and those seeking reinstatement of their license after a period of non-practice. The course consists of three parts:
Initial Professional Responsibilities
The practice of law is regulated by the Supreme Court and Office of Disciplinary Counsel. This section provides an overview of these rules and regulations, including the Rules of Professional Conduct, definitions from the South Dakota Code Annotated, Model Rules of Professional Conduct and court rules. This section also includes information about disciplinary sanctions for violating rules and regulations.
Ethics in the Practice of Law
This section discusses ethical issues that arise in the practice of law. Topics include conflicts of interest, law firm management and supervision, pro bono work, client confidentiality and other ethical concerns related to attorney conduct. The course includes lecture materials on ethics topics as well as interactive exercises to help you learn how to apply the information in your own practice.
Client Relationships & Communications Skills
This portion focuses on communication skills with clients, opposing counsel and courts. It also covers client relationships by discussing common sources of client dissatisfaction with lawyers' services as well as how to prevent them from occurring in your practice. Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn. The platform provides all the required material for the students to study. The material includes Study guide, Exam Questions & Answers, Study Notes and other resources that are useful for the students. It also gives information about the upcoming exams so that students can prepare themselves accordingly.
