The South Dakota Board of Massage Therapy regulates the practice of massage therapy in the state. The board licenses and regulates massage therapists, establishes requirements for continuing education for license renewal, investigates violations of state law and rules, and issues fines for violations.

The board is responsible for ensuring that a person applying for licensure as a massage therapist has met the minimum requirements established by the board or has been granted an extension of time to meet those requirements. The board also may grant exemptions from some of its requirements when it determines that an applicant possesses equivalent qualifications in another jurisdiction or has demonstrated exceptional ability through documented performance in the field.

In order to be licensed as a massage therapist in South Dakota, applicants must have received at least 500 hours of instruction in massage therapy from an accredited school or college. In addition, applicants must pass an exam administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).
