The South Dakota Department of Health, Division of Health Care Services has developed an approved training program for medical assistants. This program provides the student with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities, functions and duties of a medical assistant. The student will be able to demonstrate competency in the skills required to assist a physician, dentist or physician assistant in their practice.

The South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners regulates the practice of medicine and surgery. The board licenses physicians and surgeons who have obtained the necessary education, training, examination and experience required by law. The Board also licenses osteopathic physicians who have obtained the necessary education, training, examination and experience required by law. The Board also licenses physician assistants who have obtained the necessary education, training, examination and experience required by law.
