[South Dakota Optometrist Learning Course] South Dakota Optometry Practice Act

The South Dakota Board of Optometry has adopted rules and regulations for the practice of optometry. The following information is intended to assist you in understanding these rules and regulations. In addition, this information describes the process for filing a complaint against an optometrist or a complaint about the professional conduct of an optometrist. This information is also available on our website at www.sdbor.org, under “Complaints” or by calling (605) 573-3928, option 2.

The purpose of this publication is to provide general information about the South Dakota Board of Optometry and its members, its jurisdiction over the practice of optometry and its responsibilities regarding the regulation of this profession. This publication also contains general information regarding the South Dakota Optometry Practice Act, which was adopted in 1988 by the legislature and became effective on January 1, 1989. The act provides that:

Optometrists may practice under license restrictions;

Optometrists must successfully complete an examination before receiving a license;

There is no requirement for graduation from an accredited school or college of optometry;

Optometrists may prescribe topical ocular pharmaceutical agents including oral medications for certain conditions Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn.
