Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners

The Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners is responsible for licensing cosmetologists, barbers, nail technicians, estheticians, electrologists, and wig specialists. The board also regulates the practice of cosmetology and barbering in the state.

The Tennessee State Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners licenses individuals to practice the following types of cosmetology:

Hair services - cutting, styling and coloring hair; shampooing; bleaching; waving; permanent waving; relaxing hair; hair extensions; hair straightening treatments by chemical process; permanent waving (thermocauterization); chemical waving (permanent wave) by use of solution or lotion applied to the scalp and processed with an iron heated to a predetermined temperature or with special chemicals or combination thereof which produce a permanent curling effect on hair when set with rollers or other apparatus designed for that purpose.
