The Tennessee Board of Optometry (TBO) has created the Tennessee Optometry Practice Act, which is the law that governs the practice of optometry in the state. The Board has promulgated regulations and rules to implement and enforce this law. These rules address such issues as scope of practice, supervision requirements, licensure and continuing education requirements, disciplinary procedures and record keeping.

The following outline provides an overview of these rules:

Scope of Practice

Optometrists are licensed to diagnose and treat visual disorders and diseases by examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients through corrective lenses or custom contact lenses; ocular pharmaceutical agents; ocular therapeutic agents; ophthalmic devices; therapeutic biologic agents or related substances; or other methods. Optometrists may prescribe drugs under certain circumstances. Optometrists can also prescribe drugs subject to a collaborative agreement with an MD/DO who agrees to accept responsibility for supervising their activities under Section 3-6-109(c). This section also addresses how optometrists can work with physicians who wish to delegate medical authority to them by establishing a "collaborative agreement".

Supervision Requirements

Under Section 3-6-109 (d), License Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn. The platform provides all the required material for the students to study.
