The Vermont Mental Health Counselor, Clinical Learning Course is designed for mental health professionals seeking to improve their knowledge of the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. This course is approved by the Board of Mental Health Practice as a continuing education requirement for licensed mental health counselors in Vermont. It covers topics such as differential diagnosis and treatment approaches, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, ethics and legal issues, documentation requirements, research methods and emerging trends in the field of counseling.

This course consists of two sections: classroom instruction followed by online practice activities. The classroom session consists of lectures and discussions led by experienced instructors who are licensed mental health counselors with many years of experience in private practice. The online portion consists of readings from professional texts and journals; completion of diagnostic assessments; engagement in simulated sessions with patients; analysis of case studies; writing reflective essays; completion of a capstone project; and video submission reviews by faculty members.
