Osteopathy is a system of medical practice based on the theory that diseases are caused by abnormalities in the body's structure, function and chemistry. Osteopaths use manual manipulation of the body and its musculoskeletal system to diagnose and treat disease. Osteopaths also use physical agents such as heat, cold, water and exercise to improve well-being.
An osteopathic physician is a fully licensed physician who has completed an additional three years of training in osteopathic medicine after earning a medical degree from an accredited medical school. This training includes instruction in the musculoskeletal system and specialized osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) estimates that there are more than 30,000 practicing osteopaths in the United States today. The AOA reports that nearly half of all practicing physicians in Iowa are registered as osteopathic physicians; this number is expected to increase as more medical schools offer programs leading to degrees in both osteopathy and medicine. A recent survey conducted by Medscape found that nearly one-third of all primary care physicians have integrated some type of osteopathic treatment into their practices at least once during their careers Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn.
