Washington State requires respiratory care practitioners to be licensed by the Washington State Department of Health. As of 2010, the Washington State requirements include passing a written examination, having a bachelor's degree in respiratory therapy or a related field and passing an ethics exam. Candidates must also have at least one year of clinical experience under the supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist.

The Washington State Board of Respiratory Care offers two different tests for respiratory care practitioners: one for those with an associate's degree and another for those with a bachelor's degree. Both tests are administered by Pearson Vue and must be taken in person at one of their testing centers.

The Associate's Degree Examination is designed for candidates who have an associate's degree from an accredited program. Candidates must pass both parts of the test within two-and-a-half years of graduation from their program or they will have to retake both parts again before graduating with their license. The first part covers basic anatomy, physiology, growth and development, disease process and pharmacology while the second part focuses on medical emergencies, basic life support protocols and patient assessment methods such as vital signs, temperature and pain management techniques.
