The West Virginia Board of Hearing Aid Specialists is committed to protecting the public from unlicensed or untrained hearing aid practitioners. The West Virginia Board of Hearing Aid Specialists is responsible for issuing licenses to individuals who wish to practice as hearing aid specialists in the state of West Virginia. The following requirements must be met before an individual can be issued a license:

Individuals must complete an approved course of study consisting of at least 30 hours of instruction, including workshops, seminars and laboratory time. This course of study must include at least 12 hours of classroom instruction in basic audiometry, hearing aid technology and physical examination; there must also be at least 6 hours of classroom instruction in speech discrimination testing and hearing conservation.

Individuals must pass an exam given by the National Institute for Certification in Audiology (NICAB). This exam covers topics such as basic audiometry, hearing protection devices and ethical issues related to hearing aids. It also includes questions about drugs used in the treatment of ear disorders and other diseases that affect hearing ability.

Individuals must submit proof that they have completed the required educational coursework within two years prior to applying for licensure through NICAB or three years if they graduated from a foreign school.
