Nurse Practitioners are licensed registered nurses with advanced education, training and experience in primary care. They are qualified to diagnose and treat both common illnesses and injuries, as well as manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension. Nurse practitioners also provide preventive health care services, such as immunizations, screenings and counseling.

The West Virginia Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses regulates the practice of nurse practitioners in the state. The Board's mission is to protect and promote the health, safety and welfare of the public through safe nursing practice by assuring that all nurses who practice in the state meet minimum standards for professional competence that have been determined by national accrediting bodies.

The Board requires a license for any person who practices nursing in West Virginia under any title or designation implying that he or she is a nurse practitioner without first having received a license from the Board. The Board licenses three categories of nurse practitioners: Adult Generalists, Family NPs and Child/Adolescent Specialists. Learning Course is a platform that helps students to study and learn.
