The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of athletic trainers as well as the general principles and techniques of practice. This course is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in athletic training. The course offers content that is consistent with national standards, including those developed by the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). Students will learn to recognize common musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses that occur in athletics. Students will also learn how to assess, manage, prepare, and rehabilitate injured or ill athletes.

Athletic trainers work with athletes from all ages and levels of competition from preschool through professional sports. They work with a variety of athletes including football players, basketball players, soccer players, tennis players, gymnasts, swimmers and runners. They are also employed by colleges and high schools as well as corporate fitness centers.

The Wisconsin State Board of Education requires all athletic trainers working in public schools to hold certification from NATA or another nationally recognized certifying agency approved by the board.
